Early metrical and lexicographical evidence for functional stress-shifts

چکیده
Only three English diatones, outlaw , rebel record out of the current 235-item list in Hotta (2015), are on prior to seventeenth century; latest diatonic is 1786 (Sherman 1975: 63). Whether this type functional prosodic contrast was inherited or innovative controversial. We revisit Old metrical evidence for stress-shifting and present new attestations verb–noun pairs Middle verse an effort establish if limited model survives, and, so, whether how it accommodates incoming loan vocabulary. The additional support idea continuity, yet scarcity data falls short statistical verifiability. A search into detailed lexicographical information 1200–1550 reinforces hypothesis continuity by documenting differential patterns borrowing nouns verbs, prefixed unprefixed. Taken together, these two sources endorse a proposal that its earliest stages predicated prefixation, ongoing conflict between prefixal defooting Align-L (Root, PrWd) ME necessary component diachronic account prosody.

The functional neuroanatomy of metrical stress evaluation of perceived and imagined spoken words.
We hypothesized that areas in the temporal lobe that have been implicated in the phonological processing of spoken words would also be activated during the generation and phonological processing of imagined speech. We tested this hypothesis using functional magnetic resonance imaging during a behaviorally controlled task of metrical stress evaluation. Subjects were presented with bisyllabic wor...
متن کاملMonitoring metrical stress in polysyllabic words
This study investigated the monitoring of metrical stress information in internally generated speech. In Experiment 1, Dutch participants were asked to judge whether bisyllabic picture names had initial or final stress. Results showed significantly faster decision times for initially stressed targets (e.g., KAno ‘‘canoe’’) than for targets with final stress (e.g., kaNON ‘‘cannon’’; capital lett...
متن کاملProbabilistic Induction of Metrical Trees for Word Stress Assignment
An algorithm for word stress assignment in German compounds is introduced. First, a metrical tree is automatically derived from adjacent morpheme cohesion scores which are based on co-occurrence statistics. This tree is used to identify the stressed compound part by applying the compound stress rule of metrical phonology. Then the stressed syllable is identified within this compound part by mea...
متن کاملStress and accent: acoustic correlates of metrical prominence in Catalan
This study examines the phonetic correlates of stress and accent in Catalan, analyzing syllable duration, spectral balance, vowel quality, and overall intensity in two stress [stressed, unstressed] and in two accent conditions [accented, unaccented]. Catalan reveals systematic phonetic differences between accent and stress, consistent with previous work on Dutch, English, and Spanish (Slujter &...
